Lifting heavy furniture. Coughing up dust and dirt. Sifting through piles of stuff you barely remembered even having. Preparing for a garage sale can be arduous. But when it’s all said and done, a garage sale is often fun and can reap huge benefits.
My family and I hold a garage sale once every few years. Aside from the occasional disagreement of what to keep and what to sell, it’s always a good experience. Below are some of the reasons why.
1. De-clutter your home
A recent Time article titled “America’s Clutter Problem” included a jaw-dropping statistic: three-quarters of garages surveyed in one study were so full that homeowners couldn’t park their cars inside. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with stuff that’s piling up in your home, a garage sale is one way to get rid of the excess. You’ll be liberated by the newfound space and enjoy a cleaner, more efficient home.
2. Make some cash
Depending on what you have and how much you have to sell, you could make some serious dough. There’s nothing like some extra money to help pay the bills and feed the kids. Just make sure you don’t use your newfound wealth to buy a painting of dogs playing poker. Otherwise you’ll have another garage sale sooner than you think.
3. Donate to charity
You’re not going to sell everything. So what do you do with everything that’s left? Donate it! There are plenty of charities out there: United Cerebral Palsy, Goodwill, Big Brothers Big Sisters, The National Kidney Foundation, and Friends of the Library to name just a few. Another good one is Community Helping Schools, a nonprofit organization that helps public school teachers and students get items for their classrooms. Instead of sitting idle in your home, some of your unused belongings could help people in need.
4. Connect with others
Garage sales can be a social event. A multi-family sale is a chance to bond with friends and neighbors. It’s also an opportunity to meet new people and some real characters. Garage sales attract people from all walks of life and that can lead to some interesting conversations on sale items, from reminiscing over a vintage album to exchanging tips on making the perfect cup of coffee.
